Launch of project to improve primary health care in deprived rural areas

The Pilot Research of Improving Rural Primary Health Care (PHC) through Community Health Services (CHS) in Depressed Areas Project (HSS15) has two key aims: to improve service delivery in township and village health care facilities, and to promote PHC through the introduction a CHS framework. The pilot phase of this two year project, implemented by Nanchang University’s School of Public Health, was successfully launched in Jiangxi Province on 17th April, 2009.

Held in Chongyi County, in Jiangxi Province’s Ganzhou Prefecture, the launch was chaired by Mr. Xiejun, Chongyi County’s Deputy Director. Mr. Liu Wenjie, Standing Committee Member of the County Communist Party and Deputy Governor, opened the ceremony with a speech confirming local government’s commitment to PHC. He further stated that, to ensure the project’s smooth implementation, the county committee and government will continue work on policy promotion and support the project’s development in Chongyi County.

Mr. Xiao Yunchang, Chief of Rural Health at the Jiangxi Provincial Health Bureau, announced that experience gained through the project will be used to improve future health programming. While, Mr. Huang Xiping, Deputy Director of Ganzhou Municipal Health Bureau, confirmed plans to improve project efficiency through strengthened health surveillance.

Following the launch meeting, participants were taken on a site visit to Bi keng village, Hengshui town, and visited Community Health Centers in Changlong and Yangmei, and Community Clinics in Bacui and Changlong.

Regarded as a project milestone, the launch meeting was well received by participants, including Ministry of Health officials, the directors of Chongyi Bureau of Health, members of the county PMT, senior staff from county and rural township hospitals, and village doctors. The event provided an opportunity for local officials and health care workers to get to know more about CAHHF and the project itself. The event and the field visit were also covered by Jiangxi provincial and Chongyi county TV channels.
