Launch of Strengthening HIV Testing, Surveillance and Interventions through Provision of Syphilis Screening and Treatment
On June 12th, 2009 Strengthening HIV Testing, Surveillance and Interventions through Provision of Syphilis Screening and Treatment (HIV04) was successfully launched at Jiangmen city, Guangdong Province. The importance of this launch was confirmed by coverage in Jiangmen and Nanfang daily newspapers, and the Zhongxinguangdong website.
Ms. Zhou Wanling, Deputy Director of Jiangmen Health Bureau, opened the ceremony by stressing local health authorities’ role in strengthening leadership and coordination, and promoting local STD and HIV/AIDS prevention and control efforts. Speaking on behalf of AusAID’s Grant Morrison, Dong Shengli, CAHHF Facility Manager, hoped this activity could provide a model for combining STD health services with HIV/AIDS interventions and that it would generate valuable lessons for dissemination across China.
Mr. Chen Xiangsheng, the activity manager and Deputy Director of National Center for STD Control, NCSTD, China CDC, gave an overview of Syphilis prevention and treatment in China. He mentioned that the implementation of CAHHF activity would provide valuable data for national promulgation of the “Syphilis Control Program” and that policy promotion and fulfilment would build capacity in implementation agencies and personnel, and promote sustainable development of STD and HIV prevention efforts in pilot areas.
Following the launching meeting, experts from NCSTD, China CDC were given training on: the background, strategy, content and implemention requirements of the activity: the concept of “provider initiated treatment and consulting (PITC)”: and the application of syphilis rapid testing strategy. This was followed by a visit to Jiangmen Center of STD control, and VCT of Jiangmen CDC.
