Launch of CAHHF Round 2 Activity "The Strategic Study on Key Issues affecting the Development of Village Doctors"
Village doctors are an important and essential part of China’s rural grassroots health workforce. Currently nearly one million village doctors provide residents in rural areas with direct health services including prevention, diagnosis and treatment of common diseases, maternal and child health, and health education. However, with fewer and fewer medical graduates prepared to live in remote areas, the village doctors are now facing a serious human resource shortage.
On October 29th 2009 the CAHHF funded “Strategic Study on Key Issues affecting the Development of Village Doctors” (HSS0902) was launched in Suzhou. Implemented by Health Human Resources Development Centre (HHRDC) in collaboration with Rural Health Workforce Australia, this activity will look at the key challenges facing the development of village doctors, and study ways to ensure national health policy includes strategies for better retention and increased capacity building of village doctors..
Over 30 people attended the launch event, including representatives from MOH, AusAID, China Academy of Personnel Science, the Service Center of Jiangsu Human Resources for Health, Dalian Medical University, as well as local village doctors. Mr. Tian Jiang, coordinator of HHRDC, gave a detailed presentation on both the activity design and baseline survey. Village doctors shared their experience on village doctor development issue and put forward recommendations for the activity’s implementation.
As a milestone for Round 2-funded activities, the launch ceremony was both well attended and well received. Involvement of relevant stakeholders, including domestic and Australian collaborators, medical universities, grassroots-level medical staff, and village doctors themselves, has laid a good foundation for future multisectoral participation and corporation.
